To the people who have been reading my blog-- at least I hope there are some! -- I'm sorry I kind of stopped posting here. It was meant to be a Pinoy culture blog, and then stuff happened. Anyway, I hope to do better in the future... post more and all that stuff. So I've drawn up this semi-schedule of regular posts to make. Monday is for Word/s of the Week-- since I do speak at least four languages, I'll choose a word or series of words every week and post their equivalents in the four languages, and maybe discuss their differences from the viewpoint of a speaker of those languages. Tuesday is for Filipino songs-- thank you to everyone who's been reading those posts, and please do tell me if you have any requests. Wednesday is for translations and for Philippine literature. Thursday is for history and similar trivia. Friday is for Pinoy culture-- those little quirks we have that distinguish us from the rest of the world. Saturday will be translations day, or maybe some alone time. Sunday will be for current events.

I remembered this song from the 1990s as "that song that went 'mundo ko'y parang langit na...'" I do have a memory of a DJ saying that it won some sort of song-writing award. That was circa 1992 - 1993. I remember because I'd woken up from a nap one Saturday afternoon on the second floor of our old house -- a house that was made of planks with a bamboo floor on which we slept. I'd had a good dream and was feeling great, and the radio, which was playing in the living room directly below my room, played this song. I thought it was the perfect complement to the way I felt at that moment.

Panalangin ng Bayan
Huwag mo pong pababayaan
yaring mutyang bayan namin
Ipag-adya sa kalaban at mga mang-aalipin
Kasihan mo po ng lakas
ang bawat isa sa amin
Ituro mo po ang landas
na siyang dapat patunguhin
Inyong pagpalain ang Pangulo ng aming bayan
Yaring panalangin nawa'y inyong mapakinggan
Inyong pagpalain ang Pangulo ng aming bayan
Yaring panalangin nawa'y inyong mapakinggan
Amen.
The Nation's Prayer
[Translated by Laya]
Grant that you not forsake
this treasured land of ours,
protect it from the enemy and those who might enslave us
Please give strength
to each and everyone of us
and please show us the way
that we should go.
Bless the President of our nation,
this prayer we hope you will heed.
Bless the President of our nation,
this prayer we hope you will heed.
Amen.

taas-noo kahit kanino,
ang Pilipino ay ako.
I am a Filipino
[Translated by Laya]
I am a Filipino, I have the blood of a free man
noble ideals are natural to my heart
for the Philippines my country,
pure pearl of the East,
where all of the Creator's treasures seem to have been gathered...
The intelligence granted me is intended only for good
for me, it is natural to be loving
I am a Filipino, I am a Filipino
one nation, one mind* is my dream
My life and mind are dedicated to my country,
I am a Filipino, a Filipino true.
I am a Filipino, I am a Filipino,
head held high to everyone,
the Filipino is me.
*This dates the song to the Marcos regime. However, the sentiments it expresses should still hold true.
These songs keep coming back to me, although I'm not sure of the titles and some of the lyrics. I suppose it's the musical equivalent of the "pass the rumor" game-- these lyrics were never really posted on the blackboard for us to copy and memorize. We learned them by rote, from listening to the students in the higher grades / years sing them! Gawd, I suddenly miss those class songfests.
The pink and white led by day and night
as a symbol of our youth
our banner great and the creed we've said
will symbolize our truth
one purpose binds us together
a purpose so strong and great
that we join each other in a song
to show our pride and strength
Future homemakers of the Philippines,
we are ever moving on
to live better lives and to build better homes
now and in the years to come
we strive towards new horizons
always trying to reach our goal
Future homemakers of the Philippines
so true, so brave, so bold...
--------
The sun and the stars are all singing
the song rises strong from the earth
the hope of humanity bringing
a hymn to a new world in birth
United Nations on the march with flag unfurled
Together fight for victory a free new world
Together fight for victory a free new world.
-----------
Isang gabi noon ako'y nangarap
namamangka ako sa dagat
nakakita ako ng isang bulaklak
lulubog, lilitaw sa dagat
at nang lalapitan ko at kukunin
hinahampas pa rin ng hangin
ibig mo ba giliw aking hahabulin
lulubog, lilitaw sa dagat,
lulubog, lilitaw sa dagat.
[translation]
one night I had a dream
I was in a boat on the ocean
when I saw a flower
sinking and floating on the water
and when I would go near and get it
the wind would blow it away
darling, do you want me to go after it,
sinking and floating on the water
sinking and floating on the water?
-------------
Isang gabi, maliwanag
[translation]
one bright night,
I was waiting for my lovely girl
my heart was pining
and my mind was often dreaming
Look my darling at the witnesses of my love
sparkling stars, starshine and the light of the moon
will tell you that my love is true
day and night my dream is of you...

Balita galing sa bayan kong sinilangan
Posted by Laya in current events, Philippine culture, translation
Every time I remember the recent killings in Maguindanao, it hurts a lot. It's as if a person's life were that cheap, that worthless, that it didn't matter. It hearkens back to our past. Every time we think that we have achieved a precarious balance in making peace on this island, something happens that reminds us how close that past still is, how near the surface the barbaric customs of not so long ago.
I thought the Mindanao depicted in the songs of Asin in the 1970s was beginning to fade. Has it?
The song "Bayan kong Sinilangan" was written by Saro Banares, who came from Koronadal, South Cotabato. Though it mostly refers only to one place, the song could just as easily refer to the island and its past.
The song "Balita" on the other hand is perhaps more familiar to people as its chorus was sampled by the Black Eyed Peas for its "APL Song." After over 20 years, suddenly it has garnered fresh meaning in the light of recent events. Sh*t. Still hurts.
Bayan Kong Sinilangan
(Asin)
Kasing gulo ng tao, kasing gulo ng mundo
Dahil 'di magkasundo sa relihiyon at prinsipyo
Nagkagulo
'Di alam saan nanggaling, 'di alam saan patungo
Bakit kayo nag-away, bakit kayo nagkagulo

The Land of My Birth
(Original by Asin; translation by Laya)
INTRO
I was born in a town in Cotabato
As troublesome as people, as chaotic as the world
Because they couldn't agree on religion and principles
There was trouble
My hometown in Cotabato, as troubled as my mind
It doesn't know where it came from, it doesn't know where to go
Brother against brother, and flesh against flesh
They turned against one another, I don't know the reason for this trouble
Why did this happen, the answer to my question
Why are you quarreling, why did you create trouble
I would respect your principles if you respected me
If only you helped one another there wouldn't be such trouble in my home town.
CHORUS
In the land where I was born, in South Cotabato
I grew up amidst a great trouble
Because of lack of respect for the beliefs of fellow men
You brought hardship to your fellow Filipinos
Such trouble
I am making this call, asking for your help
Give way to peace, peace in my home land
Why do you need to fight, when you are brothers in blood
When will you agree, when will peace be achieved in my home town
If there were something I could do to help, to help with all my heart
My guitar I offer, for use in times of trouble
If the enemy has no heart, you should still use your own heart
Treat him as a friend, think that he also has a heart like you do
CHORUS
In the land of my birth (why is there trouble) in South Cotabato (in South Cotabato)
I grew up (when will it end) amidst such great trouble (such trouble)
Because of lack of respect (when will they agree) for the beliefs of fellowmen (of men)
Fellow Filipinos (fellow Filipinos) are who you're fighting against (why are you fighting them)
Such trouble...

Balita
(Asin)
Chorus:
Lapit mga kaibigan at makinig kayo
ako'y may dala-dalang balita galing sa bayan ko
nais kong ipamahagi ang mga kuwento at
ang mga pangyayaring nagaganap sa lupang ipinangako
I
II

News
(Original by Asin; translation by Laya)
Chorus:
Come near my friends and listen
I have brought news from my hometown
I want to disseminate the stories
And the things that are happening in the promised land
I
The land that I came from is stained with blood
There are parrots that cannot fly, in golden cages
There are trees without leaves there are hearts that cannot move
Because of the things that are happening in the promised land
II
From the moment I first saw this land
I also saw the tiny flame in the hearts of men
Fueled by the corruption until it burst into flame
Now hearts are frightened in the promised land
(repeat chorus)
III
Once, the fields were golden
Once, the birds were as free as men
Once, only silence
Lulled to sleep the children who know nothing about the world
IV
Now the promised land is pleading
Drop tears upon the fire in its heart
Listen to the shouts of the hearts
Of men who if you would but feel are part of you
V
Come nearer my brothers and listen
I have brought news from my hometown
I want to disseminate the stories
That are happening in the land that was promised us.

Three songs became the background for the first EDSA: one an angry lament, another a call for action, the third a joyous affirmation. These songs once again became the background to a people's mourning last August as we accompanied Cory Aquino to her final resting place. And now that her son and Ninoy's has finally announced his bid for the Presidency, shall we hear those songs once again against a background of yellow?
Here are the lyrics for Handog ng Filipino sa Mundo and Magkaisa, with English translations for those who cannot understand Filipino. Translations are literal, though, and not metered.
For Bayan Ko lyrics, see Even Birds.
Handog ng Filipino sa Mundo
(APO Hiking Society)
'Di na 'ko papayag mawala ka muli.
'Di na 'ko papayag na muli mabawi,
Ating kalayaan kay tagal natin mithi.
'Di na papayagang mabawi muli.
Magkakapit-bisig libo-libong tao.
Kay sarap palang maging Pilipino.
Sama-sama iisa ang adhikain.
Kelan man 'di na paalipin.
Ref:
Handog ng Pilipino sa mundo,
Mapayapang paraang pagbabago.
Katotohanan, kalayaan, katarungan
Ay kayang makamit na walang dahas.
Basta't magkaisa tayong lahat.
Masdan ang nagaganap sa aming bayan.
Nagkasama ng mahirap at mayaman.
Kapit-bisig madre, pari, at sundalo.
Naging Langit itong bahagi ng mundo.
Huwag muling payagang umiral ang dilim.
Tinig ng bawat tao'y bigyan ng pansin.
Magkakapatid lahat sa Panginoon.
Ito'y lagi nating tatandaan.
(repeat refrain two times)
Coda:
Mapayapang paraang pagbabago.
Katotohanan, kalayaan, katarungan.
Ay kayang makamit na walang dahas.
Basta't magkaisa tayong lahat!
The Filipino's Gift to the World
(Original by APO Hiking Society; translation by Laya)
I will not allow it, that you will be lost again
I will not allow it, that they will regain
Our beloved freedom, we've dreamed of for so long
We will not allow them to take it away again...
Arm in arm thousands of people standing there
Suddenly 'twas so sweet to be a Filipino
There united with one single purpose
Never again will we be slaves.
Ref:
The Filipino's gift to the world
A peaceful method for change
Truth, freedom and justice
Can be achieved without violence
As long as we all unite.
Look at what is happening to our country
The poor and the wealthy unite
Arm in arm with nuns, priests and soldiers
This part of the world became heaven.
Let's not allow darkness to reign again
Each man's voice should be heard
Brothers and sisters all in the Lord
We should always remember that.
(repeat refrain two times)
Coda:
A peaceful method for change
Truth, freedom and justice
Can be achieved without violence
As long as we all unite!
---------------------------------------
Magkaisa
(Virna Lisa; sung by Sarah Geronimo at Cory Aquino's funeral)
Ngayon ganap ang hirap sa mundo
Unawa ang kailangan ng tao
Ang pagmamahal sa kapwa'y ilaan
Isa lang ang ugat na ating pinagmulan
Tayong lahat ay magkakalahi
Sa unos at agos ay huwag padadala
Chorus
Panahon na (may pag-asa kang matatanaw)
Ng pagkakaisa (bagong umaga, bagong araw)
Kahit ito (sa atin Siya'y nagmamahal)
Ay hirap at dusa
Magkaisa (may pag-asa kang matatanaw)
At magsama (bagong umaga, bagong araw)
Kapit-kamay (sa atin Siya'y nagmamahal)
Sa bagong pag-asa
Ngayon may pag-asang natatanaw
May bagong araw, bagong umaga
Pagmamahal ng Diyos, isipin mo tuwina
(Repeat Chorus)
Magkaisa (may pag-asa kang matatanaw)
At magsama (bagong umaga, bagong araw)
Kapit-kamay (sa atin Siya'y nagmamahal)
Sa bagong pag-asa
Unite
(Original sung by Virna Lisa; translation by Laya)
Now that hardship is prevalent in the world
Compassion is what people need
Love for one's fellowman should be given
We all come from one root
All of us come from one race
Let's not let the rain and the flood sweep us away
Chorus
It's time (there's hope, you can see)
For unity (a new morning, a new day)
Even if (He loves us all)
it takes hardship and suffering
Let's unite (there's hope, you can see)
And work together (a new morning, a new day)
Holding hands (a new morning, a new day)
Towards a new hope
Now there's a new hope we can see
A new day, a new morning
Always remember God's love...
(Repeat Chorus)
Let's unite (there's hope, you can see)
And work together (a new morning, a new day)
Holding hands (a new morning, a new day)
Towards a new hope...

Maging Sino Ka Man
(Rey Valera)
Ang pag-ibig ay sadyang ganyan
Tiwala sa isa't isa'y kailangan
Dati mong pag-ibig wala akong pakialam
Basta't mahal kita kailan pa man
'Wag kang mag-isip ng ano pa man
Mga paliwanag mo'y di na kailangan
At kahit ano pa ang iyong nakaraan
Mamahalin kita maging sino ka man
Mahal kita pagka't mahal kita
Iniisip nila ay hindi mahalaga
Mahal kita maging sino ka man
Mali man ang ikaw ay ibigin ko
At kahit ano pa ang iyong nakaraan
Mamahalin kita maging sino ka man
Mahal kita pagka't mahal kita
Iniisip nila ay hindi mahalaga
Mahal kita maging sino ka man

Whoever You Are
Translation by Laya
Love is just like that
Trust in each other is needed
I don't care about your former loves,
I just love you forever.
'Don't think about anything else
Your explanations are not needed
And whatever your past is,
I will love you, whoever you are.
I love you, and because I love you
What others think is not important
I love you, whoever you are.
Even if it would be wrong to love you
I am blind in my love for you
And whatever your past is,
I will love you, whoever you are.
I love you, and because I love you
What others think is not important
I love you, whoever you are.

Hoyess. Long before Leann Rimes sang "Life Goes On," there was Neocolours and "Tuloy Pa Rin." I heard this song when I was on the jeep last night going home, and it is so upbeat I wished I could often hear it in the morning when I am starting my day.
Tuloy Pa Rin
Neocolours
Sa wari ko'y
Lumipas na ang kadiliman ng araw
Dahan-dahan pang gumigising
At ngayo'y babawi na
Muntik na
Nasanay ako sa 'king pag-iisa
Kaya nang iwanan ang
Bakas ng kahapon ko
CHORUS:
CHORUS:
CHORUS:

It Still Goes On (The Song of my Life)
Neocolours / Translation by Laya
I believe
The darkness of the day is passing
Slowly waking up
And now I'll make up for
Almost
I have resigned my self to being alone
Able to leave behind
The footprints of my past
CHORUS:
The song of my life still goes on
Even if the shape of your heart would change
I am now ready to challenge my world
Because it still goes on...
Sometimes I still look
For the memory of your kiss (memory of your kiss)
I admit that it will be long
Before I can forget
It would be hard to revive
The love we left behind (I already know that)
Accepted it and now I am learning
To face this reality
CHORUS:
The song of my life still goes on
Even if the shape of your heart would change
I am now ready to challenge my world
Because it still goes on...
Almost
I have resigned my self to being alone
Able to leave behind
The footprints of my past
CHORUS:
The song of my life still goes on
Even if the shape of your heart would change
I am now ready to challenge my world
Because it still goes on...
The song of my life still goes on
Even if the shape of your heart would change
I am now ready to challenge my world
Because it still goes on...
The song of my life still goes on (still goes on)
Even if the shape of your heart would change (shape of your world)
I am now ready to challenge my world (challenge)
Because it still goes on... (still goes on)
The song of my life still goes on
Even if the shape of your heart would change
I am now ready to challenge my world
Because it still goes on...
The song of my life still goes on (still goes on)
Even if the shape of your heart would change (oh...hoh...)
I am now ready to challenge my world (ready to face the world)
Because it still goes on...
The song of my life still goes on
Even if the shape of your heart would change
I am now ready to challenge my world
Because it still goes on...

Di Na Natuto
(Gary Valenciano)
ooh...
o eto na naman
laging nananabik ang aking puso,
ooh...
muling bumabalik sa 'yong mga halik
di na natuto
refrain:
isang ngiti mo lang
at ako'y napapaamo (woh...)
yakapin mong minsan
ay muling magbabalik sa'yo
na walang kalaban-laban
ang puso ko'y tanging iyo lamang

Never Learned the Lesson
(translated from the original Filipino by Layamaria)
here you are again, teasing my heart
how many times have I avoided you
never learned the lesson
a glance from your eyes, can always be felt even from afar, ooh
it's so hard for me, yet I am drawn near again
never learned the lesson
just one smile from you and I am tamed
embrace me only once and I will return to you
without any defenses
this heart of mine is for you alone
ooh...
oh, here we go again
my heart is ever craving for you,
ooh...
again returning to your sweet kisses
never learned the lesson
refrain:
just one smile from you and I am tamed
embrace me only once and I will return to you
without any defenses
this heart of mine is for you alone
ooh...
refrain:
just one smile from you and I am tamed
embrace me only once and I will return to you
without any defenses
this heart of mine is for you alone

Nakapagtataka
(latest version is by Spongecola)
Walang tigil ang gulo sa aking pag-iisip
Mula nang tayo’y nagpasyang maghiwalay
Nagpaalam pagkat hindi tayo bagay
Nakapagtataka, oh.
Oh, oh.

It Makes Me Wonder
(translated from the original Filipino by Laya)
The chaos in my mind never stopped
From the moment that we decided to separate
Said goodbye because we weren't suited for each otehr
So mysterious, oh..
Why is my fate like this?
Haven't you said goodbye so many times?
Every farewell was laden with tears
It makes me wonder, makes me wonder
Chorus:
Don't you ever get tired, or even get jaded
From all of our quarrels that never seem to end?
The tears have all been wiped away, emotions and heart are all dried up
There's nothing left to give, I don't feel anything anymore.
Bridge:
If we really love each other
Why can't we agree?
Oh, oh.
The rain doesn't stop, and where are you sunshine
What happened to our love for each other
Isn't there any hope left
It makes me wonder, where have you gone?
Don't you ever get tired, or even get jaded
From all of our quarrels that never seem to end?
The tears have all been wiped away, emotions and heart are all dried up
There's nothing left to give, I don't feel anything anymore..oohh
The tears have all been wiped away, emotions and heart are all dried up
There's nothing left to give, I don't feel anything anymore..
If we really love each other
Why can't we agree?
Oh, oh.

Yes, okay, who could forget Dorina and Lavinia and the immortal line "You're nothing but a second-rate, trying hard copycat!" with matching throw-wine-in-face action. At least that's what people immediately remember when they think of "Bituing Walang Ningning".
Me, I love the movie and the made-for-TV series, but mostly I love the song itself, "Bituing Walang Ningning". Yes, okay, knock me on the head. (My roommate says: With pleasure!)
I just love the way the lyrics were written (the original Filipino is still more poetic and beautiful, I apologize for my poor translation). So it's idealistic. So it's hopelessly romantic. But I've always thought that fame is a cold companion when you're at the top alone. As another former roommate of mine once said: "So what's a career? You retire when you're 65, after that, what do you do? Do you grow old alone? No matter if you are the very best there will come a moment when you have to step down and make room for the next generation. If your work is all you have, and you can't do it anymore, do you die if you find yourself all alone? Cold comfort all that money, all the memories of past success, if you don't have anyone to share it with."
For me, that's what the song "Bituing Walang Ningning" is all about. One can't get so wrapped up in the material things that one forgets to feed one's heart. (Shall I knock you on the head now? asks my roommate, brandishing the palu-palo that she is using to do the laundry.)
I've posed this questions to so many people already: Would you rather be Cleopatra, or Elizabeth I? Would you choose your crown, or your heart?
Both were queens, great politicians in times when men dominated everything. Both used their feminine wiles to keep their countries safe from others who wanted to conquer them. But Cleopatra made an error: she fell in love with Marc Antony, and paid for that price with her country and her life. She chose her heart, and now she is known not for the statesman that she once was, but for the tragic love affair that doomed Egypt (and that dramatic death-by-asp rather than be captured). On the other hand, Elizabeth was also young and impetuous, always walking the thin line, always in danger of being executed should she make the tiniest mistake. She got linked to men, 'tis true (Thomas Seymour and Rob Dudley, to name two), sometimes to the point when her enemies thought they had her. But she always avoided their traps. In the end, she died alone, but the country that had been destitute when she inherited it had become a world power during her reign. Yet, she died alone, some say, a bitter old woman who could not bear to have lovers in her vicinity and who even did not want her male courtiers to marry. She was known and revered as a great statesman... reputed to have once said "I am a failure as a woman, yet my very failures as a woman are what make me a great queen."
So which one? Cleopatra, or Elizabeth I?
Some time ago I watched the Koreanovela Hwang Jini (the famous kisaeng) on TV. Hwang Jini said, "Hindi ba maaaring pagsabayin ang tungkulin at ang pag-ibig (Can I not have both duty and love)?"
Go figure.

Bituing Walang Ningning
(Originally sung by Sharon Cuneta)
Kung minsan ang pangarap
Habambuhay itong hinahanap
Bakit nga ba nakapagtataka
'Pag ito ay nakamtan mo na
Bakit may kulang pa
Kapag tayong dalawa'y naging isa
Kahit na ilang laksang bituin
'Di kayang pantayan ating ningning
CHORUS 1
Balutin mo ako ng hiwaga ng iyong pagmamahal
Hayaang matakpan ang kinang na 'di magtatagal
Mabuti pa kaya'y maging bituing walang ningning
Kung kapalit nito'y walang paglaho mong pagtingin
CHORUS 2
[Repeat 2nd Stanza]
[Repeat CHORUS 1]
[Repeat REFRAIN 2 except last line]

Star Without Shine
(Translated from the original Filipino by Layamaria)
Sometimes our dreams
We search for them all our lives
Why is it so mysterious
When you have achieved them
Why is something still missing?
The stars I've reached
But my heaven is still to be with you
When the two of us are one
Even a million stars
Cannot compete with our brilliance
CHORUS 1
Wrap me in the mystery of your love
Let it cover the sparkle that won't last
I would rather be a star without shine
If in exchange I get your unfading love
CHORUS 2
Hide me in the shelter of your love
To forget the treacherous sparkle of success
With you now I am a star without shine
Hiding in the brightness of our love
[Repeat 2nd Stanza]
[Repeat CHORUS 1]
[Repeat REFRAIN 2 except last line]
Hiding in the brightness and sparkle of our love

Hard Habit To Break
(Original by Chicago/Revived by Martin Nievera)
I guess I thought you'd be here forever
Another illusion I chose to create
You don't know what you got until it's gone
And I found out just a little too late
I was acting if you were lucky to have me
Doin' you a favor I hardly knew you were there
But then you were gone and it was all wrong
Had no idea how much i cared
Chorus:
Now being without you takes a lot of getting used to
Should learn to live with it but I don't want to
Living without you is all a big mistake
Instead of getting easier it's the hardest thing to take
I'm addicted to you babe you're a hard habit to break
You found someone else you had every reason
You know I can't blame you from runnin' to him
Two people together but living alone
I was spreading my love too thin
After all these years
I'm still tryin' to shake it
Doin' much better they say that it just takes time
But deep in the night its an endless flight
I can't get you out of my mind
Chorus:
Being without you takes a lot of getting used to
Should learn to live with it I don't want to
Being without you is all a big mistake
Instead of getting easier it's the hardest thing to take
I'm addicted to you, you're a hard habit to break...

Isang Ugaling Mahirap Baguhin
(Original by Chicago/Revived by Martin Nievera)

I was a child when my parents took my sister and me to watch a rare event -- a movie showing at the barangay plaza. There were no chairs... we bundled up and brought sacks to sit on. The screen was a huge sheet stretched on part of the plaza wall.
The movie seemed very familiar. It was "Natutulog Pa Ang Diyos (God Is Still Asleep)." I realized it was an adaptation of a radio drama I had been hearing off and on for the past few months. The trials and vicissitudes of Gillian, the heiress deprived of her rightful place, and of Andrew, the usurper who had been put in her place, had been in the background of our daily life, as the radio played incessantly from dawn till dusk and could be heard all over the house.
Then there was the theme song. It was something else actually. Was Gillian actually asking if God was asleep? I don't remember if there was such a part in the movie, but then it has been twenty years. All I remember were the parts where the babies got switched inside the car, then the maltreatment of Gillian by her foster parents, and the part where Andrew got operated on after being in an accident, when I hid my eyes from so much blood.
Why? Was God sleeping, to allow such bad things to happen to someone who didn't deserve them? As we look around us today, we can ask the same thing. Is He asleep? Is He even there? Why does He let all the atrocities happen? Why doesn't He save the innocents who are suffering all over the world? Why does He let evil remain? The song says that we have to do something and He will help us. But why doesn't He then help those people who are trying to make a difference? Why does He stand by and let journalists be murdered, let activists be salvaged, let those who would speak the truth be silenced?
Is He sleeping?

Natutulog Ba Ang Diyos?
(Gary Valenciano / OST - Natutulog Ba Ang Diyos)
Bakit kaya, bakit ka ba naghihintay
Na himukin pa, pilitin pa ng tadhana
Alam mo na kung bakit nagkakaganyan
Lumulutang, nasasayang and buhay mo
At ang ibinubulong ng iyong puso
Natutulog ba ang Diyos, natutulog ba?
At ikay ay kaagad sumusuko
Konting hirap at munting pagsubok lamang
Bakit ganyan, nasaan and iyong tapang
Natutulog ba?
Chorus:

Is God Sleeping?
(Gary Valenciano / OST - Natutulog Ba Ang Diyos)
(Rough Translation by Laya)
Why is it, why are you waiting
To be coaxed, to be forced by fate
You already know why
You feel that you are floating, that your life is being wasted
And your heart whispers,
Is God sleeping, is He sleeping?
And you immediately give up
Faced with a little hardship and small trials
Why are you that way, where is your courage?
Feeling cowardly, losing hope
And thinking that He is sleeping, that God is sleeping
Is He sleeping?
Chorus:
Strive, try, to make your heart strong
Only you can shape your tomorrow
You should not think that God is still asleep
Your life has value to Him.
Should it be that you would wait
And be coaxed, be forced by fate
Do what should be done
Strive and believe in the Almighty
God is ready to help you
He is just waiting for you, my friend

Sometimes I like to translate my favorite songs, poems or literary excerpts into another language just for the heck of it. Just to see if I can do it. Here's a sample translation of one of my favorite Cebuano songs:
Usahay
Usahay, nagadamgo ako
nga ikaw ug ako nagkahigugmaay
ug nganong damguhon ko ikaw
damguhon sa kanunay
sa akong kamingaw
usahay, nagamahay ako
nganong nabuhi pa ning kalibutan
ug nganong gitiaw-tiawan
ang gugma ko kanimo
kanimo da...
Hiligaynon version:
Kung Kaisa
Kung kaisa, nagadamgo ako
Nga ikaw kag ako nagahigugmaay
Kay ngaa nga madamguhan ko ikaw
Pirme ko madamguhan
Sa akon kamingaw
Kung kaisa, nagamahay ako
Ngaa nabuhi pa sini nga kalibutan
Kay ngaa gintiaw-tiawan
Ang gugma ko sa imo
Sa imo, ah.
Tagalog version:
Minsan
Minsan, nangangarap ako
na ikaw at ako'y nagmamahalan
at bakit pinapangarap kita
pinapangarap lagi
sa aking pag-iisa
Minsan, nanghihinayang ako
bakit nabuhay pa sa mundong ito
at bakit pa ako niloko
gayong ang pag-ibig ko'y sa iyo
sa iyo lamang.
English version:
Sometimes
Sometimes, I dream
that you and I love each other
and why do I dream of you
always dream of you
when I am lonely?
Sometimes, I regret
why I ever lived on this earth
and why was I taken for a fool
when my love is for you
for you, alone.
